Traditionally the countries importing the most mohair tops from South Africa are Italy, China, and the UK and 2022 was no different.

The South African mohair industry currently has six buyers purchasing mohair on the 14 official mohair auctions.

We are living in a time where extraordinary things happen, and this is no surprise anymore. On the 18th of January 2023 an extraordinary thing happened at the Willowmore showgrounds, Eastern Cape where the VAN HASSELT Angora ram sale (with guest sellers) took place.

As we know, Italy is a major destination for our mohair tops and while a lot is consumed by the Italian spinners, these yarns are used by many top and medium end brands around the world.

By comparison to the 2021 season, kids were 2% less of the composition of the 2022 clip in 2022.

It is interesting to note that when the mohair market came under pressure, the difference in price between certified mohair and non-certified mohair, increased.

The Mohair Council of America (MCA) welcomed and spoilt us from the moment we landed in San Angelo, Texas. It was humbling and heart-warming as we visited a few ranches and their passion for their goats is visible and their love for the mohair industry is enormous.

This local artist is all about honouring the art of working with mohair. Design is a way to capture stories and memories of places and spaces and recreate these moments into objects.

Gugu Peteni studied fashion and textile design at the Nelson Mandela University (Cum Laude honours, 2017). Post-graduate, she worked as the in-house designer and retail manager for Mohair SA for three years, and in the process started her own fashion brand GUGUBYGUGU.

In Rowan Magazine 72 we are celebrating 20 years of Kidsilk Haze! This iconic yarn has been a mainstay in the Rowan range for two decades and remains a firm favourite with knitters all over the world today.

Last year the mohair, wool and cotton industries were invited to join this project, the great idea of the current Italian Ambassador to SA’s wife. She saw so much talent that she wanted to assist by opening doors to their fashion industry.
