Insights from the 2023 Textile Exchange Conference

The Mohair South Africa team travelled to London last month for the 2023 Textile Exchange Conference. This global gathering brought together over 1,800 in-person and virtual attendees, encompassing a diverse spectrum of voices from farmers and activists to CEOs and NGOs; all united in the shared goal of shaping a more sustainable future for the fashion, textile, and apparel industry.

For Mohair South Africa, this conference was more than representing our industry; it was an opportunity to deepen our understanding and dedication toward a sustainable future. As the conference unfolded, diverse voices resonated through sessions, addressing challenges and proposing solutions to tackle the pressing climate crisis. Each day of the conference was dedicated to exploring a distinct theme, providing a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted aspects of sustainability within the industry.

From Industry-wide Collaboration to On-the-Ground Impact

Conference Key Highlights

Several key insights emerged from the conference, shaping the discourse on sustainable practices within the industry:

  • Slowing Down Production and Consumption: The industry must recalibrate its production and consumption models to address environmental concerns.

  •  Scalable Change and Diversity: The primary goal is to effect scalable change, recognising the diversity of experiences within the industry.

  •  The Power of Language: Shifting from "consumers" to "citizens" was identified as a key driver of change, empowering individuals and offering a vision for a more sustainable future.

  •  Strengthening Supply Chain Relationships: Brands were encouraged to build stronger relationships with supply chain partners to foster collaboration and accountability.

Mohair's Unique Journey: From Veld to Fashion

Mohair, with its unique qualities and a journey deeply rooted in the South African veld, has the potential to become a preferred natural fibre for fashion brands committed to sustainability. The conference highlighted the increasing interest in collaborations between natural fibre producers, fashion brands, and other stakeholders. These partnerships aim to create a unified approach to sustainability, leveraging the strengths of each entity across the supply chain.

Our industry is not just selling a product; it is selling a journey. This journey, from the veld to the final garments in a store, involves countless hands working together. After the Textile Exchange conference, it became clear that numerous brands aspire to become part of this journey, aligning with Mohair South Africa's commitment to sustainable and celebrated natural mohair fibre. The conference was not just an event; it was a catalyst for meaningful collaborations and a step forward in shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future for the Mohair industry.
