Training at Grootfontein College of Agriculture

Students being trained to class mohair in shed

Beauty Mokgwamme continues to provide the annual mohair training for Grootfontein College of Agriculture, she loves it and is very grateful that she can still contribute by teaching mohair classing skills to Grootfontein students.

On the 11-13th October Beauty and Sanmarie spent long hours in the Mohair shearing shed and were joined by Fundiswa, the Training officer and Nandie, an Intern both from Grootontein- What a great team.

We trained 75 first year students on:
· Mohair classing standards & guidelines
· Classing of fleeces
· Mohair types
· Shearing procedures

We ended off with assessments which went very well.

During this training Sanmarie shared the importance of traceability and the partnership we have with Oritain and what value this has for the broader industry.

The students did very well to learn a lot in a very short period, and we loved sharing our knowledge and passion!

Feedback from an aspiring student

“I take this opportunity to thank Mohair SA, MET, SAMGA, their respective representatives Mrs Beauty and Mrs Sanmarie for this inspiring opportunity that they’ve granted the 1st years. Coming out of a mohair-based family I have taken real pride in familiarizing myself with mohair at large.

The opportunity at hand gave me a lot of insight about Mohair - learning more about the fibre itself.

I never knew how to class Mohair but now I can gladly attest that I have got the ball rolling. Having this rich knowledge about the fiber has given me more dedication and passion to pursue a future within the Mohair industry.

This exposure has granted me an eye and skill for Mohair.”
