The first sale of the 2022 winter season took place in Port Elizabeth on the 16th of August, with 90830 kg's on offer, of which 93% was sold.

The first sale of a new season is always hard to predict due to the large variations in the composition of what is being offered, and the changes from one season to another.

The competition among buyers remained fierce, with RMS-certified mohair being the most sought-after on the day. The average market indicator closed on R374.84 p/kg, which is 7% less than the last sale of the summer season. This is due to higher inflation in Europe and economic instability in Asia, because of lower than-expected economic growth in those regions.

The highest price of the sale was R727.50 p/kg, for a bale of 25-micron kid mohair.

Compared with the previous sale, prices were as follows:

Kids Down 9%
Young Goats Down 9%
Fine Adults Down 7%
Strong Adults Down 2%
Average Down 7%
