Launching a new producers branch – in Gauteng

The launch of the Gauteng Branch of Mohair was an exciting and momentous occasion, filled with hope for the future of mohair farming in the region. The two-day event was a resounding success, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the organizers and the generosity of the sponsors who made it possible. The event was held on Hayward and Liesel Vermaaks farm, in the Bronkhorstspruit area.

On the first day, an Information Day was held, which was attended by existing and prospective angora goat farmers from across the region. The event featured several industry experts and representatives who shared their knowledge and insights on various topics related to mohair farming. Sanmarie Vermaak, the Manager of the South African Mohair Growers' Association (SAMGA), spoke about the organization's purpose and the support they offer to mohair producers. Marco Coetzee, the General Manager of Mohair South Africa (MSA), discussed the Mohair Trust and the role of Mohair SA in the industry. Beauty Mokgwamme, Mohair Empowerment Trust (MET) Officer, provided valuable information on the Mohair Empowerment Trust. Sias Reynolds, a farmer from Beaufort West and Vice Chairman of SAMGA, shared how technology has helped him in his farming endeavours. Hans Greeff introduced the Angora Rambreeders Society and explained the benefits of being a member. Lastly, Dr Mackie Hobson, our Industry Veterinarian, shared insights on angora goat health, which is crucial for the wellbeing of the goats and the success of the industry.

On the second day, a Training Day was held, which provided practical training sessions for nearby schools, farm workers, and some of the farmers who attended Day 1. The presenters demonstrated and provided practical training on various topics related to mohair farming. Sias Reynolds demonstrated the correct way to handle angora goats, while Hans Greeff explained what to look for when selecting a goat for purchase.

Dr. Mackie Hobson practically demonstrated how to look after an angora goat's health, and Beauty Mokgwamme taught attendees about classing of Mohair.

Throughout the event, there was a palpable sense of gratitude and hope for the future of mohair farming in the Gauteng region. Attendees expressed their appreciation for the valuable information and practical training they received, and the organizers expressed their gratitude to the sponsors who made the event possible. There was a shared sense of hope for the growth and development of the Gauteng Branch of Mohair, and a belief that the region had a bright future in the industry.
