Angora Goat Day (BOK DAG) held in Aberdeen and Beaufort West

On Wednesday 21 June, Sanmarie Vermaak and Beauty Mokgwamme visited the Aberdeen Flock competition. The competition was well supported by farmers in and around Aberdeen.

John Broeksma had the best group of goats (2 Kraals of 3 goats each).  The overall winner of the day was awarded to Fanie Marx. The producers really enjoyed the day, and you could see that after the worst drought and Covid, the producers are positive and happy to once again be able to show their flock. Well done to everyone involved in arranging the very successful day.

On Thursday 22 June, we attended the Beaufort West Angora Goat Day.  More than a 100 people attended the well-organized information, training, and flock competition day.  Sanmarie Vermaak and Sias Reynolds gave an overview of the Mohair Congress and the current market. Rother Bekker spoke about the current news in Mohair SA as well as the new structure.

Matthew Fox from House of Fibre gave some valuable information on seed removal in mohair.  About 56 farmworkers and a few of the producers then attended the Mohair Classing training presented by Beauty Mokgwamme.  22 Groups of Angora goats were entered into the flock competition. MJ Koorts CC and Son won the best individual ewe prize.  The heavy group of ewes was won by Wildré le Roux. The best kapater was awarded to Julie Siebrits and the light group of ewes was won by MJ Koorts CC and Son.

Lecturer teaching farm workers about mohair classing

It is wonderful to be able to visit our branches and attend their activities. We want to congratulate Aberdeen and Beaufort West for arranging their successful Angora Goat Days. Thank you to each producer for delivering and showcasing their high-quality goats. Thank you for bringing your farm workers to the mohair classing training. This investment will pay off.

The future success of the mohair industry rests heavily on the ‘ground’ specifically on how active the branches are. We want to encourage our producers to reach out to us as we want to visit your branch annually to update you on mohair matters, Dr Mackie is available to share his knowledge, training is crucial, especially of our farmworkers. This is also an important opportunity for our producers to engage with us on issues that are crucial in their world.
