This local artist is all about honouring the art of working with mohair. Design is a way to capture stories and memories of places and spaces and recreate these moments into objects.

Gugu Peteni studied fashion and textile design at the Nelson Mandela University (Cum Laude honours, 2017). Post-graduate, she worked as the in-house designer and retail manager for Mohair SA for three years, and in the process started her own fashion brand GUGUBYGUGU.

Last year the mohair, wool and cotton industries were invited to join this project, the great idea of the current Italian Ambassador to SA’s wife. She saw so much talent that she wanted to assist by opening doors to their fashion industry.

Mohair is benefiting from a range of fashion trends favouring the fibre’s natural and luxurious qualities, as highlighted at the latest textile trade fairs. Read more in the latest edition of Twist Magazine.
